The lower back consists of the five lumbar spine vertebrae and their surrounding musculature. Muscles in this region include the lumbar paraspinals, quadratus lumborum, multifidi, and erector spinae, among others. Lower back pain can be the result of a number of causes, including muscle, joint or even visceral dysfunction. In aging adults, pain in the lower back can occur due to decreased bone mineral density that leads to postural abnormalities and/or compression fractures.
