The diaphragm is the main muscle of respiration, forming the top of the abdominal cavity and the base of the thorax. Located under the heart and lungs, many consider it an essential part of the “core.” This muscle is incredibly important during exercises, as coordinating breath with exercise changes the pressure distribution in the abdomen and affects how full the lungs can become. The diaphragm also plays an important role in pelvic floor exercises and rehabilitation.
