The calves are formed by two major muscles: the gastrocnemius, which crosses the knee and ankle, and the soleus, which crosses the ankle. These two muscles join to form the thick achilles tendon located at the back of your ankle. Both muscles help lift the heel, which pushes the toes downward and helps propel the body forward during walking, running and jumping. They also help with maintaining upright balance.
